What is Stamp Duty?
The Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is the tax imposed by the UK Government on the purchase of land and properties with values over a certain threshold.
As of 2017, the value at which SDLT becomes applicable is £125,000 for residential properties and £150,000 for non-residential or mixed-use land and properties.
This tax is payable to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and must be remitted within 30 days of the completion of purchase.
If you have a solicitor, agent or conveyancer, they’ll usually file your return and pay the tax on your behalf on the day of completion and add the amount to their fees.
You can calculate the amount of SDLT you'll usually have to pay here: https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/calculate-stamp-duty-land-tax/#/intro
