Sarah strikes Gold in Duke of Edinburgh achievement

Mingling with celebrities and Royalty marked an exciting end to a long journey for Sarah Cordes when she was presented with her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at Buckingham Palace.

Sarah strikes Gold in Duke of Edinburgh achievement

The sales development executive at Kier Living Eastern’s Canalside View development in Aylesbury, began her epic quest to achieve the top award when she was just 14 years old – ten years ago. Completing the Bronze and Silver awards while still at school, Sarah began working towards her Gold award after finishing her degree at university and joining the team at Kier Living Eastern.

As part of the challenge Sarah had to volunteer, complete a physical activity and learn a new skill. After volunteering as a Cub leader, learning to play a tenor drum in a bagpipe band and swimming 100 lengths in less than an hour, Sarah embarked on the final stages of her award – a five day and four-night residential trip with 48 cubs to Switzerland and a gruelling 83km trek in Snowdonia National Park.

Sarah said: “The trek was both horrendous and amazing. We were trekking 20km a day for four days and camping out three nights. We had to carry all our own food, camping equipment and clothes and so much was uphill.

“It is a huge achievement though – personally and for my future, to show that I can achieve what I set my mind to. Kier Living Eastern have been incredibly supportive, especially when I was training and trekking. They were really happy for me when I achieved the award.”

Both Sarah’s parents and brother have also completed the Duke of Edinburgh Awards so the achievement also continued a family tradition, said Sarah.

Sarah was presented with her Duke of Edinburgh certificate and pin badge this summer by BBC Breakfast News presenter Naga Munchetty. She also mingled with celebrities including McFly band member Tom Fletcher and spoke with Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

David Thomas, sales and marketing director at Kier Living Easter, said: “We are all incredibly proud of Sarah’s achievement in getting her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and her dedication in putting in the hours and effort it requires. Sarah is an invaluable team member at our Aylesbury site, where she works hard offering home buyers excellent service and support.”

Sarah supports potential buyers at Kier Living Eastern’s Canalside View development, a stunning collection of three, four and five-bedroom homes set alongside the banks of the Great Union Canal. Price at the development start from £425,000 for a three-bedroom home. The sales office and show home in Aylesbury is open daily from 10am until 5pm.
