In detail...

Surrounded by the rolling hills of the Colne Valley, Linthwaite, known locally as Linfit, is a village in Kirklees, West Yorkshire.

Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is situated 4 miles west of Huddersfield, on the A62 in the Colne Valley. The River Colne, Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the Huddersfield to Manchester railway line and A62 main road all pass near to the village. These transport links across the north meant that the village was ideally placed for textile mills to be built, making use of the river to produce cloth, and the village flourished at the turn of the twentieth century.

A village rich in history

Stonegate lifestyle image

Some of the most notable members from the Linthwaite community are the activist, Florence Lockwood and the director of woollen manufacturers, Charles Lockwood; both resided in the Upper Clough of Linthwaite where the family owned Black Rock Mills – a site now occupied by Stonegate.

Florence narrated her colourful life in her diaries and was a campaigner for peace during the first world war. She was a suffragist campaigning for the vote for women and also a talented artist whose paintings depicted the picturesque Colne Valley. Her impact on the local community in Huddersfield has been felt throughout the years - it has been mooted that a commemorative blue plaque is to be erected in Linthwaite to celebrate her life and achievements.

Explore the hidden Gems around Stonegate

Linthwaite is a bustling village with a vast amount of pubs - including the Sair Inn. If you’re visiting the area be sure to pop in as it is now one of the very few award-winning ‘own brew’ pubs left in the country. The largest employer in the village is the pharmaceutical drug manufacturer Thornton & Ross - one of the UK’s leading producers of over the counter medicines.

Surrounded by the rolling hills of the Colne Valley, Linthwaite is located just above the glorious Peak District National Park. The Peak District National Park is valued for its diverse landscape and breath-taking scenery; it is undoubtably the perfect place to take a hike, explore the Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, have a picnic, or simply to find solitude in the beautiful English countryside. Linthwaite happens to be one of the stone villages folded into the creases within this beautiful landscape – not only that, but the village is also close to transport with the M62 motorway just minutes away by car. *RECOMMEND A FRIEND.
