A unique new lease of life

Riverbank Meadows lifestyle image

Once a former coal mining village, Fryston, has more recently become a leafy, semi-rural suburb of Castleford in West Yorkshire. Nestled at the edge of the meandering River Aire, the small village is situated just 2.5 miles north east of Castleford, following Wheldon Road. The colliery opened in the 1870s in the grounds of the now-demolished Fryston Hall and the village was built in the 1880s to house some of the miners. The coal mine was named Fryston and, at its peak, the pit employed around 1,300 miners. After the pit’s closure in 1985, the colliery buildings were demolished, leaving little trace of its mining heritage.

Regenerated in 2005

In 2005, a re-generation programme called the Castleford Project led by Wakefield Council, Yorkshire Forward and the local residents supported by the Castleford Heritage Trust, carried out a number of re-developments in Fryston including a new Village Green and the Fryston Country Trails, a green space incorporating 8km of footpaths, cycleways and bridleways.

As expected in a small village, within a 10 minute walk there are local amenities and businesses dotted around, including the Tieve Tara Medical Centre with adjoining pharmacy, convenience stores, off-licences, hair & beauty salons, takeaways, taxi offices, post office, auto-centres and petrol stations. The road into Castleford features larger, high street stores and shops.

Local Area

There are an abundance of schools in the area. There are eight primary schools, three junior schools and two high schools within 2 miles of the development. Castleford itself has seen economic growth in recent years and has become a retail and leisure time destination for many visitors. The town contains the Junction 32 multi-store centre and the Xscape Leisure Complex, both in the Glasshoughton suburb at the south of the town incorporating a range of restaurants and retail outlets. Castleford has an open and an indoor market, a shopping centre on Carlton Street, a retail park, and various well known supermarkets. Castleford has excellent transport links with it only being 0.93 miles away from the M62 at Junction 32 via the A656 road. It has other A roads that criss-cross the town and provide access to Junction 31 on the same motorway. The town also has a railway station on the Hallam and Pontefract lines and a new £6 million bus station adjacent to it, providing daily commuters with a ‘joined-up’ travel experience.
